The 'hampton' part of the name is of English origin. 'Kilk' may be derived from the Cornish kylgh, 'a circle'. This ancient settlement is the most northerly village in Cornwall, situated on high ground astride the A39. It is on the old Ridgeway to the south-west and which was incorporated by the Romans in their network of roads. The village still caters for the needs of travellers and has a variety of shops and accommodation for tourists Population
Statistics - 8493 acres of land Maps Kilkhampton is north east of Bude towards the Devon border 1. The whole of Cornwall
Family 1: Richard and Elizabeth Sampson Richard is probably Richard 1604 from Marhamchurch, the son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Whitford. (Alternatively it may be Richard Vglone, born in Poughill in April 1601). Richard marries Elizabeth Sampson in February, 1622 in the village. There is an Elizabeth, born in Kilkhampton in 1600, the daughter of John Sampson. Their youngest daughter is born in Poughill and it seems possible that Richard dies there in 1630 - there is a will in the Cornish Record Office. Elizabeth is still a young woman - it seems probable that she is the Elizabeth Uglow who marries Laurence Cobbledick in Poughill in 1633
