River Ottery, Waterloo Farm, North Petherwin

This parish is in the north of Cornwall near the Devon border. 'Petherwyn' is recorded in the 'Devenscire' section of the Domesday Book. Named after the Welsh patron saint of the church, St Padern. The Dukes of Bedford have been prominent land owners in this area. The seventh Duke drained the land and built new farmhouses and cottages which provided distinctive homes that are still appreciated today. The village is today mainly residential with people commuting out of the parish.

Family 1: John and Thomasin Gregory

John 1759 is the son of John and Grace Wells, born in Poundstock. This is a late marriage when he is over 40 to Thomasin Gregory in 1801 in North Petherwin. There is a Thomasin born in tNorth Petherwin in 1777, the daughter of Richard and Jane Mitchell. They move around but eventually John and Thomasin Gregory live in North Petherwin where he is a labourer. John dies before the 1841 census. The 1841 and 1851 census finds Thomasin living with son William in North Petherwin. She dies and is buried in Whitstone in 1856.

  • son George 1803 born in Marhamchurch. He  marries Mary Orchard at Exminster in 1825 and then goes to the Midlands and the North - Family 1a in Birmingham

  • daughter Martha (poss Mary) 1804 born in Boyton. In 1828 she marries John Worth, a labourer. They are living in St Thomas, Launceston in 1851 - by 1881, they are in the same place but John is working as a tanner. Martha dies in 1882.

  • daughter Jennifer 1806 born in Egloskerry (from Bill Uglow). She marries John Brook(s) in July 1828 in Lifton. He is a farm worker, born in 1803 in North Petherwin. They are on the 1841 census as John and Jane but this become Jenny in 1851 and 1861.

    They have several children all born in Lifton - William (1828-1828); Jane (1830-1856), John (1833-dies after 1901), William Uglow Brook (1838-1878: William is a farm work and later railway porter in Plymouth in 1861 but becomes the station master at Lustleigh in Devon by 1871), Thomas Uglow Brook (1839-1841), Elizabeth Uglow Brook (1843-1844), Mary Ann Uglow (1845-dies after 1891).

    In 1851, Jenny/Jane and John are living in Lifton village. John is a farm worker and daughters, Jane and Mary are with them. They have a lodger, William Palmer, a tailor. In 1861, they are living in Lower Town, Lifton. John is a farm worker and Jenny a bookbinder. The girls have left but they still have William Palmer as a lodger. John dies in December 1861 and in 1871, Jane is living in Dunce Hill, Lifton. She is widowed and a pauper. Her daughter, Mary Butt, married to a sailor, is with her.

  • daughter Elizabeth 1820 born in North Petherwin. She does not appear in the census - there is a record of an Elizabeth who dies in Plymouth St Andrew in 1837 aged 19

Family 1a: William and Mary Ann Ellacott

William 1813 is born in  Egloskerry. He is the son of John and Thomasin Gregory and the grandson of William and Elizabeth Hobbs In 1841 he marries Mary Ann Ellacott:

  1. [from John 1921] a widow, she was born a Veale in 1818 in North Petherwin OR
  2. there is an IGI record for Mary Ellacott born in North Petherwin in 1820

William is a butcher at the 1851 census as well as in a directory in 1870. He is also the postmaster. William is also a farmer of  110 acres at Collacott [in 2001 there is still a John C. Uglow whose address is Collacott Farm].  

In 1851, he and Mary live at Petherwin Gate with 6 children and mother, Thomasin, who is described as a pauper. In 1861, still at Petherwin Gate, William is farming 40 acres and he and Mary have 11 children. It looks as if they are a methodist family.

Mary Ann dies in 1880 and William in 1885, both in North Petherwin.

  • daughter Mary Ann 1842, born in North Petherwin. In 1861 she is living with her parents and acting as housekeeper. She marries Daniel Hutchings from the village in 1870 but sadly dies two months later. 

  • daughter Elizabeth 1844 born in North Petherwin but dies the same year.

  • daughter Jane 1845 born in North Petherwin. In 1861 she is living with her parents - unmarried in 1871 but the census in 1881 shows that she marries Daniel Hutchings after Mary Ann's death - they are farming 119 acres at Hellscott, North Petherwin with daughters Mary and Lily

  • daughter Thomasin 1847 born in North Petherwin. In 1861 she is living with her parents  - unmarried in 1871 and in 1881, she is housekeeper for brother Abel 1851. Maybe she marries Thomas Kelley in Plymouth in 1888 - there is no sign of them on the 1901 census. There is a Thomasin who dies in 1917 but also a Thomasin dies in 1910 aged 60 and is buried in North Petherwin parish church - possibly Thomasin 1847

  • son William 1848 born in North Petherwin. In 1861 he is living with his parents. He marries Mary Gillard and they farm at Kingston, Stoke Climsland - Family 4

  • son George 1850 born in North Petherwin. In 1861 he is living with his parents. He marries Mary Jane Martin, born in Whitstone in 1859 - Family 5

  • son Abel 1852 born in North Petherwin. In 1861 he is living with his parents - he marries Thomasin Colwill - Family 3.

  • son Samuel 1854 is born in North Petherwin. In 1861 he is living with his parents. Another butcher in the family - in 1886 he marries Ellen Venton - Family 6

  • son Emanuel 1856 born at Collacott, North Petherwin. In 1861 he is living with his parents. In 1882 he marries Mary Symons, born in 1858 - Mary dies in 1896 and Emanuel marries , Elizabeth Short 1853-1933, the sister of his sister-in-law, Caroline Short, wife of Francis. He farmed at Collacott. Emanuel also dies in 1933 and is buried at Copthorne Methodist - Family 7

  • son Francis 1859 born in North Petherwin. In 1861 he is living with his parents. In 1886 he marries Caroline Short (born 1862 in Stoke Climsland) in Launceston RD. Francis farms at Billacott, North Petherwin - Family 8

Family 2: John and Mary Jane Curtis

John 1841 is born in North Petherwin, the son of William and Mary Ann Ellacott and the grandson of John and Thomasin Gregory. He lives with his parents at Petherwin Gate - in 1861 he is a carter. Although his father is still alive, in 1871 John is farming 120+acres on his own account at Lower Troswell. He continues to do this probably until his death in 1921. He marries Mary Jane Curtis in 1883 - she was born in Launceston - and tehy have a large family. John dies in 1921 aged 80 and is buried at Petherwin Gate Methodist. Mary Jane was born in 1856, dies in 1928 and is buried at Petherwin Gate Methodist
  • daughter Mary Jane 1884 born in North Petherwin - in 1901 she is living at Druccombe Terrace, St Mary Magdalene, Launceston, boarding with James Baker, a tailor and working as an apprentice at a stationers. In 1911 she is in Dorset at King St, Weymouth, now an assistant in a stationers. In 1914 she marries Frederick Parry

  • daughter Ann Curtice 1885 born in North Petherwin - on 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses she is living with her parents. In 1916 she marries John Taylor

  • son William John 1886 born in North Petherwin - on 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses, he is living with his parents. In 1933 he marries Elsie Firemark(?). There are no children. William dies in 1967.

  • son Samuel 1888, born in North Petherwin - on 1891 and 1901 censuses he is living with his parents. He turns to teaching and by 1911 he is lving at 37 South Rd, Kingswoobd in Somerset and is a certificated assistant teacher. And who else is lodging there? Winifred Gladys Spencer (1888-1970). Winifred was born in Bitton, Gloucester and was an assistant in a drapers shop. Samuel and Winifred marry in Barnstaple in 1915 and later Samuel teaches in Bristol - they have no children. This is probably Samuel named on the village War Memorial, in which case Samuel was a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery.He dies in 1965 in Weston super mare

  • daughter Emily 1890 born in North Petherwin - on 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses with parents. In 1916 she marries William Veale (NB possibly her grandmother's maiden name?)

  • son Abel 1891 born in North Petherwin - on 1901 and 1911 censuses with parents. He dies in 1920

  • daughter Jane 1893 born in North Petherwin - she dies in infancy in 1895

  • son Alfred 1896 born in North Petherwin - on 1901 and 1911 censuses with parents. This is probably Alfred named on the village War Memorial, in which case he was a private in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and later the Gloucestershire Regiment . He marries Alice Gilbert in 1923 and they farm at Troswell. Alfred dies in 1945

      • son Christopher J 1957 - he marries Lesley Dickson in 1980. He later marries Helen Sullivan. A member of the Institute of Marine Engineers, he works as a marine surveyor.

        • daughter Rebecca Jane 1983 born in Truro. She now lives with her mother in Warwickshire. She attended Princethorpe College, took a BA in Theatre at Coventry and now works as a business development manager.

        • daughter Victoria Jayne 1991 born in Dover RD. She attended Redruth School and is now at Truro College

    • daughter Veronica 1932 - born in North Petherwin. She marries John Mules 1935, a Helston teacher.

  • son Edwin Thomas 1898 born in North Petherwin - on 1901 and 1911 censuses with parents. In December 1913, he is registered as a temporary boy clerk in the Civil Service Commission. He enlisted in the Lancers in the war - despite their name, they fought dismounted! He was a corporal at the end of the war and his name is on North Petherwin War Memorial.

    After the war, he becomes a bank official. In 1933 in Launceston RD, he marries Annie Dingle (1897-1984), possibly the sister of his cousin William's wife, Alice. In the 1960s, he is living at Watchet in Somerset where he dies in 1973

Family 3: Abel and Thomasin Colwill

Abel 1852 is born in North Petherwin,  the son of William and Mary Ann Ellacott and the grand son of John and Thomasin Gregory.

In 1883, he marries Thomasin Colwill, possibly born in Boyton in 1848, the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Colwill. Abel is a farmer of 126 acres in the village (is he sharing Collacott with brother John?). He dies 1889 and is buried in North Petherwin Parish Church. Thomasin carries on the farm.

  • daughter Anne Louisa 1886 born in North Petherwin. At the 1901 census she is at Lower Troswell in North Petherwin, with her mother, working on the farm

Family 4: William and Mary Ann Gillard

William 1848 is born in North Petherwin, the son of William and Mary Ann Ellacott and the grand son of John and Thomasin Gregory. He marries Mary Ann Gillard and they farm at Kingston, Stoke Climsland. He dies young in 1877 and another tragedy follows when their daughter, Mary, dies young. The 1881 census shows Mary carrying on farming 156 acres by herself with a three year old son and her brother, William Gillard. In September 1883 in Plymouth, Mary Ann marries again, to Philip Bridgman. In 1891, they are farming together at Kingston. But soon Mary Ann is widowed again - by 1901, her son William is managing the farm and she is living with him.

  • son William 1878 - the 1891 census shows him as a pupil at Launceston grammar school and he is the farmer at Kingston, Stoke Climsland in 1901. Later that year he marries Elizabeth Ann Maddever - she was born in 1875. William dies in 1919 and is buried at Venterdon Methodist as is Elizabeth who died in 1962

    • daughter Mary 1902 - she marries Howard Daniel in Manchester in 1929

    • son William Philip 1904. He was the principal of the firm, Glover&Uglow. He marries Phyllis Wise in 1930. William dies in 1981

      • son William David 1931. He marries [Elizabeth] Joan Preston, born 1933, in 1954. They live in Callington where Joan died in April 2010

Family 5 : George and Mary Jane Martin

George 1850 is born in North Petherwin, the son of William and Mary Ann Ellacott and the grand son of John and Thomasin Gregory. In 1880, he marries Mary Jane Martin, born in Whitstone in 1859.

They live in North Petherwin and by the 1881 census, are ensconced in Sydenham Damerel. In 1901 and 1911 they are at Townlake, Sydenham Damerel where George is a butcher and farmer of about 6 acres. Mary Jane dies in 1902 and George in 1927 - both are buried in Luckett Methodist

  • son John Martin 1878 born in Sydenham Damerel. In 1901 he is at Townlake, Sydenham Damerel. He dies, unmarried, in 1911

  • daughter Ellen 1883. In 1901 she is at Townlake, Sydenham Damerel. She marries Albert Penny, a farmer, in 1910 and has two children, George and Marjorie. Ellen dies in 1961

  • daughter Mary Elizabeth 1886. In 1901 she is at Townlake, Sydenham Damerel. In 1908, she marries Geo Wadland, a farmer at Callington and has five sons, Ralph, Leslie, Donald, Ernest and Kenneth. Mary dies in 1954

  • son William 1888. In 1901 and 1911 he is at Townlake, Sydenham Damerel. He is a butcher and farmer. He marries Alice Kate Dingle in 1934, possibly the sister of his cousin Edwin's wife, Annie. He dies in 1954

    • William Arthur 1936. He marries [Elizabeth] Joan Neale in 1965. They lives at Edgcumbe Farm, Milton Abbot, Tavistock and have been prize-winning pig breeders over several decades

      • daughter [Caroline] Ann 1967 born in Tavistock RD. She works on the farm and is a well-known breeder and judge. In 2009, Ann was the judge of the best-in-show at the Royal Show at Stoneleigh in Warwickshire.

        • daughter Ellen Mary 1923 - in 1950, she married Cleverdon William Davey (1924 - . They lived at Hellescott House, North Petherwin, farming and running a bed and breakfast business.

  • son Francis Owen 1892. In 1901 and 1911 he was at Townlake, Sydenham Damerel. In 1911 he was attending Hockerill Training College, Bishops Stortford in Hertfordshire. He was a farmer. He married Isabella Congdon. She was born in 1896 but died in 1931 and is the Bella Mary buried at Luckett Methodist).

    Francis, known as Frank, remarried in 1939, this time to Stella Winifred Pitts, born Brind (1896-1982). She had divorced her first husband, Clarke Pitts. Stella and Frank settled at Hyde Farm, in Hampshire with Stella's daughter, Valerie Elisabeth Pitts (b 1926). They retired first to to Totton near Southampton, and later to Romsey where Frank died on 16th March, 1976. Stella was a teacher in Hampshire and could not continue her career as a divorcee and therefore kept her name as Mrs Pitts. Frank became known as Mr Pitts - Pitts was given as an alternative in the National Probate Calendar. Frank doted on his step-daughter and would have three step-grandchildren following Valerie's marriage to Leonard Salmon Marshall - known as Bill - in 1952: Andrew William (1955-2019), Susan Elisabeth (1956 -) and Timothy John (1959-).   • daughter Caroline Jane 1895 - in 1901 and 1911 she is at Townlake, Sydenham Damerel. Unmarried, she lived with her brother Leslie. She died in 1974.

  • son Leslie Abel 1897 - in 1901 and 1911 he is at Townlake, Sydenham Damerel. Unmarried, he lived with his sister Caroline. He died in 1964 and is buried at Luckett Methodist

Family 6 : Samuel and Ellen Venton

Samuel 1853 is born in North Petherwin, the son of William and Mary Ann Ellacott and the grand son of John and Thomasin Gregory. He marries Ellen Venton who sadly only survives a year after the birth of their son. She dies in 1889 and is buried at Petherwin Gate Methodist. A butcher, Samuel lives in the village. In 1911 he is at 1911 Hellescott House, North Petherwin with his son - there are three domestic servants. Samuel dies in1916.

  • son Samuel Ernest 1888 but always known as Ernest. In 1911 he is at 1911 Hellescott House, North Petherwin, living with his father and working in the family business. He married Edith Mary Vosper in 1914. They moved into Launceston in the late 1930's, where Ernest opened a thriving butcher's shop.  He was busy during the war as a Government Meat Inspector , travelling all over Cornwall, inspecting meat imports arriving at the docks, etc. They lived all their lives in Launceston and Ernest died in Plymouth hospital in 1966.

    • son Samuel Ronald 1916 but always known as Ronald. In 1938 he marries Dorcas Caroline Venner. They lived in Launceston and Ronald dies in Plymouth hospital in 1973

      • daughter Dorcas Anne 1940 but always known as Anne. She marries Tony Howard in 1964. They have two daughters

      • son Anthony Samuel John 1946. In 1970 Tony marries Susan Webber. Susan died in a car accident in 1978. Tony later remarries, to Glynis, and has another daughter Zoe.

        • son Neil Jon 1971 - he marries Melanie Pearce in 1994

    • son Mervyn Vosper 1928 was born in North Petherwin but moved into Launceston in the late 1930's, where his father opened a thriving butcher's shop.  He went to Launceston College and then trained as a Maths teacher, though he had many other skills and interests, not least the family history. He taught in Kent for many years at the wonderfully named Norton Knatchbull School in Ashford. He also hung out (and sailed) at the Folkestone Yacht Club. But in 1967 Mervyn returned to Launceston College as a member of staff. In the same year, he married Barbara Catherine Anderson. For the last 43 years of his life they lived in the St. Stephens area of Launceston. He died in April 2010 in Plymouth Hospital and his ashes are buried in St. Stephens chuchyard.

      • Tristan James Anderson 1968 is a software engineer in Sussex. In 2001 he marries a South African from Cape Town, Nikki Thompson

Family 7: Emanuel and Mary and Elizabeth Symons

Emanuel 1856 born at Collacott, North Petherwin. He is the son of William and Mary Ann Ellacott and the grandson of John and Thomasin Gregory.

He marries in 1882 Mary Symons, born in 1858 - Mary dies in 1896 and in 1901 Emanuel marries Elizabeth Short 1853-1933, the sister of Caroline Short, the wife of Emanuel's brother Francis.

In 1901 he was farming at Collacott but in 1911, the family are to be found at Bartons, a farm just south of Sydenham Damerel village. He is also doing some mining. Elizabeth dies in 1933 and Emanuel in 1935. They are buried at Copthorne Methodist.

  • daughter Ann 1882 born in North Petherwin - she dies young in 1898

  • daughter Jane 1884 born in North Petherwin - with her father in Collacott in 1901 and in 1911 at Bartons, a farm just south of Sydenham Damerel village. In 1914 she marries Alfred Edward Dawin the village.

  • daughter Bessie 1885 born in North Petherwin - in 1901 we find her aged 16 visiting a farm at West Tremollett, Coads Green, Launceston. In 1904, she marries the farmer from West Tremollett, Amos Ernest Gribble, 15 years her senior. He was born in Stoke Climsland in 1871. In 1911, they are on the farm at West Tremollett - in 2009 the farm is still in Gribble hands! They have 4 children - William 1905, Annie 1907, Elsie 1909 and Henry 1910. Bessie's cousin, Louisa Symons, is visiting.

  • son George 1890 born in North Petherwin. He is with his father in Collacott in 1901 and in 1911 at Bartons, a farm just south of Sydenham Damerel village. In 1923 he marries [Veronica] Hetty Lintern. She is the daughter of a Dartmoor prison officer, George Lintern and Ilet Heggadon (sic). Ilet is the sister of another prison officer. Hetty is born in 1900 and is living with her parents in prison quarters in Princetown in 1901 and also in 1911. George and Hetty both die in Wiltshire - George in 1977 and Hetty in 1981. There is a MI in Market Lavington.

    • daughter Veronica M 1924 - she marries Lionel Thymme in 1951 but he dies in 1954

Family 8: Francis and Caroline Short

Francis 1859 is born in North Petherwin. He is the son of William and Mary Ann Ellacott and the grandson of John and Thomasin Gregory. In 1861, 1871 amd 1881, he is at Petherwin Gate with his parents. In 1886 he marries Caroline Short (born 1862 in Stoke Climsland) in Launceston RD. In the censuses of 1901 and 1911, Francis is farming at Billacott, North Petherwin. Caroline dies in 1942 and Francis in 1943

  • son Samuel Short 1881 born in North Petherwin. In 1901 and 1911, he is on the farm at Billacott. In 1918 he marries Jenny Dymond born in 1891. They continue to farm at Billacott. Jenny dies in 1953 and Samuel dies in 1967.

In 1962 he marries Mary Emma Peter (born Mary Emma Bate) in Launceston RD.
